How to Create a Website [Basics]

Note: In this article, I’ll try to provide clear-cut ideas on the requirements of creating a website and give an overview on website making.

So you want to create a website? But don’t know how to? Creating website from a scratch might not be easy, but it certainly isn’t difficult. But before creating a website, you should know the requirements.

Let’s make this clear: there are two elements involved in creating your own website.

  • Domain name
  • Hosting

Domain Name

In short: Domain name is an unique name that identifies your website. For example, Indialoka.com is a domain name. You can’t buy Indialoka.com as a domain name as it is already purchased by me. Like I said, domain names are unique names.

If you are willing to create a company website, then you should have a unique domain name, say: companyname.com. Note that often the popular short domain names are already purchased and good domain names are sold for millions of rupees.

You can buy domain names from domain registrar (term used for a company that provides domain names). A .com domain name in India will cost you anywhere between Rs. 400 to Rs. 600.  Sometimes it is cheaper, if you buy during the festive seasons or do bulk ordering.

Hosting

So you finally purchased a domain name. But what next? You don’t want an empty website right?

Hence you should create webpages and upload them. But where do you upload these webpages? Onto the server. But you don’t have a server yet. So buy one!

If you are starting out, you can’t buy a whole server. Because it’s pretty expensive. However, you can buy a part of server, say for example: 1GB space. You have to buy this space so that you can upload your files or HTML pages.

This part is called hosting. Hosting your website onto the server requires you to purchase the whole server, or the part of server. Usually most of the webmaster opt for servers in US as they usually responsive and faster. Indialoka’s server is located in Texas, USA.

Usually you have to shell out Rs. 100 to Rs. 200 for 1GB hosting space every month.

I hope this clears up your doubts on how to create a website, although I haven’t discussed on creating webpages but I’ll make some time out to write a brief tutorial on the same.
