Should You be a Freelance Designer, or Freelance Writer?

Now the next question that comes to your mind is whether to become a freelance designer or writer? This is a very good question if you have both skills. There are quite a few things you’ll want to go over before making your ultimate decision.

While most Freelance Designers get paid more for their designs, roughly earning $25-$200 per design – you may still want to think of becoming a freelance writer instead.

For example, if you have trouble creating designs and it seems like a major headache to you at certain times, you could just do freelance writing instead. Choose something that is the easiest for you and something you like to do. I strongly advise on asking yourself “Do I like designing or writing more?”. It is very simple when you think about it, but sometimes you can lose track of what your goal is. You could also do both if you really wanted to.

Many people do part time designing and part time freelance writing so it makes up for a full time job all together. That way you don’t burn yourself out on writing as well. I know how it is when it comes to doing repetitive tasks so switching it up a few days of the week would keep you more focused on your tasks. Most writers will get paid less than a designer but since so many people require articles these days, you may end up working more unless you set your prices to something that would suit your financial needs.

Here are just a few things that designers are responsible for

  • Finding out a client’s overall design style preferences
  • Have the ability to create beautiful digital art
  • Creating a design layout in Adobe or Paint
  • Including mock ups of designs
  • Redoing designs in case a client needs edits

Here are just a few things that freelance writers are responsible for

  • Gathering data like specific topics, specifications on a client’s article or piece
  • Visualizing your words before bringing them on paper
  • Redoing some articles in case a client doesn’t approve of them

As you can see, freelance writing is quite different from designing but they are still in the same “creation” category. while both have the ability to create words / designs, they also have their cons. Some of the cons include redoing articles if a client doesn’t like them and even worse is having to redo a specific design because it is sometimes difficult to get the results just as your client wants.

I would have to add that freelance writing is easier because if you do have to make an edit, you will get a specific reason why your client didn’t like the writing piece.

For the design, you have to pull from your creative instincts to get the right feel of what your client wants so understanding their explanations are crucial to the design. This could become contradicting when a designer feels that a design does not fit a client’s project, but the client deems that it is perfect. This is why it’s a good idea to include 3 different mock ups from the designs you create and let your client chose what they like.
